Wikipedia defines Beta readers as
a person who reads a written work, generally fiction, with what has been described as “a critical eye, with the aim of improving grammar, spelling, characterization, and general style of a story prior to its release to the general public.”
In other words they also works as Editors in real life. It’s very common to have beta readers in the fiction world. They’re a great help.
I first came upon them in fanfiction.net back in the days writing about something. A reader suggested that I should get Beta reader to check out my works and help me out with grammar errors.
Browsing through the web, I looked for a beta reader and see what expectations they have for alpha readers (Writers/authors).
- To write something worth reading.
It means to write something that would entertain yourself as it entertains your readers. If you write something that is not worth reading, the beta reader would ignore it. as if you are satisfied with reading your work, beta reader might also be satisfied.
- Don’t mess with beta readers
That is a fact, you should not offend or mess with your beta reader. That means don’t be rude or nag on them. Be nice to them, make sure that they have lots of time to edit it. Or else they will not help you out with your fictions, in spelling, grammar or plot holes. That leaves you in a bad relationship with beta readers.
What I have experience with my beta reader, is that he takes probably the whole day to edit it. I know it’s long, but he’s a multitask person. i guess it’s hard for him to priorities other things over it.
Anyways he was a good supporter of a beta reader, he suggested a few ideas and plots that might be good to add. it can be seen in Endless love, similar to Harry Potter’s travel through voldermort’s Diary.
As time went by, he no longer had time to edit. but I appreciate his help with suggestions and correction my faults. I learned a lot from him, and realized lots of his pain while reading my old fictions. so thank you, for being there for me 🙂
